Lower Plenty Loop:
Usually when Steve and I go for a ride, which is not terribly regularly, we start off chatting a bunch because we only really get to catch up on rides... and they're not terribly regular.

Anyway, today was an exception. Up Heidelberg rd to the Upper/Lower junction there was a distinct half wheeling going on, and I'm blaming Steve. I tried to ignore the fact his wheel was halfway in front of mine, but I couldn't. Like a fly on a tv screen, the eye kept getting drawn to it, and feeding into a rage loop. Eventually that rage overcame the ennui and I restored the balance of nature by placing my wheel parallel to Steves. Sure we were going faster than before, but at least our wheels were lined up. Well... that is until he put his wheel halfway in front again, and again, and again, until finally I cracked and pushed way deeper than I had hoped to go 5 minutes into the ride.

From then on I hit each of the punchy hills on our route with purpose, getting myself into the box made snug by a few extra christmas kilograms.

Once back through Heidelberg we cut through the Yarra boulevard to a coffee in the morning sun. I demanded Steve ride 53x15 in the saddle for the length of the boulevard, and followed suit myself, finishing the rise up to Walmer st with my hands behind my back, trying to balance the needs of power and control. Straining on the pedals at a tectonic cadence of 50rpm, straining to keep my head up in a relaxed fashion.
