6am NRR:
Rolling onto the highway, I made my way from the back of the bunch to the front, saying g'day to mates as I passed them in the line. Tozer saw me roll through and told me to light it up, I laughed and said I was just making position. Still, when I got to the front, I ensured the pace picked up, and I was feeling good about that... then one of the bak pocket dudes rolled over the top of me with with an extra 4-5 km/h worth of speed. I was all of a sudden less confident, and instead starting to worry about hanging on.

It was odd though, I kept an eye my heart rate and it was always a lot lower than the perceived effort told me it should be, mid 160s instead of high 170s. While I pondered this conundrum and tried to get my legs around smoothly others were doing the work up front, and a feeling of guilt and laziness built. At the Black Rock/Sandi hill these feelings finally pushed me out of the queue and to the front. I finally hit the full wind and pushed a solid 450-600W to the top. The bunch hadn't cracked, but I'd finally pushed my cardio vascular system through the malaise of the early ride, and I actually started to feel a lot better.

Extras would have been good in the afternoon, a few kms to roll out the legs and clean up the neural pathways that fire of each muscle... but it was too hot to do anything but head straight home.
