On one hand riding a single speed MTB with a gearing suitable for single track anywhere other than singletrack is an absolute pain in the arse. On the other hand, mine monos like a god damned trooper. I'm not sure if it's the 2.2" tyre or that the chain stays are set to the perfect length for me to to pop up the front end and balance.... it's almost enough for me to forget that I have to maintain 120rpm to just do 30kph. Almost.

I opened my big fat mouth before we got to Hans' loop. I goaded Richard and Gavin with taunts about riding away from them in the trail. I basically set myself up so that if I failed, I'd be sure to be on the receiving end of some pretty serious heckling. My pride would be shattered and I'd sook for ages while I tried to find a suitable excuse.

With that in mind I started to wind things up relatively early, to find places where I could open up gaps to the two behind. It took me a few sections of trail to realise that I was not only hurting, I was loving it. There were rocks and braking ruts all over the place, but my tyres were gripping almost everything and what they weren't didn't matter.

I was a touch spent on the way home, but it was worth it. My pride was intact.
