If you're part of the Australian MTB community, odds on you've heard about the sudden death of James Williamson (the best write up I've seen is here).

I proposed a minutes trackstand at fatties, but during discussion about the event the idea went by the wayside. Still, even though I'd only met the bloke a few times, at the fatties no less, it seemed fitting to do something. So I rode Dickies loop flat out, reminded and thankful that every turn, every berm and every smile were a gift for the living.

A quick thank you to the magical trail fairies who've done some work on the loop. The little wooden bridges are over and above the call of duty, and should hopefully keep the place in good nick through winter.

So the fatties ride itself, we had a group of 10 or so, including some faces we haven't seen in a while (Jim, Walter and Steve Cusworth (sp?)). Most of the trails had a layer of sand or dust, it called for a bit of aggression to grip the tyres and a willingness to slide, I slid more than most.

Out along the trails we flew, using the last vestiges of sunlight to begin a trip round Hans' loop, finishing the trail off by memory in the dark. Much like two weeks before it was awesome to ride, not knowing what was under your tyres only heightened the adrenalin and widened the grins, because it sure as fuck didn't slow us down.
